2. Unit Converter
The Unit Converter tab combines three converters under one roof. Use the pill selectors at the top of the tab to switch between Weight, Volume, and Currency.
Weight
Convert between KG, LB, Metric Ton (MT), Short Ton (ST), and Long Ton (LT).
- Enter the weight value.
- Select the From unit.
- Select the To unit.
- The result appears instantly.
| Unit | Full Name | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| KG | Kilogram | Air and sea freight worldwide |
| LB | Pound | US domestic freight |
| MT | Metric Ton (1,000 KG) | Bulk cargo, charter parties |
| ST | Short Ton (2,000 LB) | US bulk cargo |
| LT | Long Ton (2,240 LB) | UK shipping, charter parties |
Volume
Convert between Cubic Metres (CBM) and Cubic Feet (CFT). 1 CBM = 35.31 CFT.
Currency
Convert between 13 major shipping currencies using live exchange rates. The rate and last-updated timestamp are shown below the result. Click Refresh Rates to fetch the latest.
3. Chargeable Weight Calculator
Carriers charge you based on whichever is higher: the actual weight of your cargo or the volumetric weight (how much space it takes up). This calculator works it out for you.
How to Use
- Select the freight mode: Air, Sea LCL, or Courier/Express.
- Enter the number of packages.
- Enter dimensions for one package: Length, Width, Height. Toggle between CM and Inches.
- Enter the actual gross weight of the entire shipment (KG or LB).
- Click Calculate.
Reading the Results
| Field | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Total Volume | Total CBM of all packages combined |
| Volumetric Weight | Weight calculated from dimensions using the carrier’s formula |
| Actual Weight | The real weight you entered, converted to KG |
| Chargeable Weight | The higher of actual or volumetric — what the carrier bills on (highlighted) |
| Revenue Tons (W/M) | For sea freight: MAX of weight in MT or volume in CBM |
Volumetric weight = (60 × 40 × 50 × 10) ÷ 6,000 = 200 KG
Actual weight = 180 KG
Chargeable weight = 200 KG (volumetric applies — cargo is light for its size)
Volumetric weight = (120 × 100 × 80 × 2) ÷ 1,000 = 1,920 KG
Actual weight = 2,400 KG
Chargeable weight = 2,400 KG (actual weight applies — cargo is heavy)
Revenue Tons (W/M) = MAX(2.40 MT, 1.92 CBM) = 2.40 W/M
Volumetric Weight Formulas
| Mode | Formula | Divisor |
|---|---|---|
| Air Freight | (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 6,000 | 6,000 |
| Sea LCL | (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 1,000 | 1,000 |
| Courier | (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 5,000 | 5,000 |
4. Rate Calculator
Calculate the total freight cost from a quoted rate. Handles different rate bases and converts between currencies.
How to Use
- Select the freight mode: FCL 20′, FCL 40′, FCL 40’HC, LCL, Air, or Breakbulk.
- Enter the rate and select the currency (e.g. 4.50 USD).
- Choose the rate basis: Per KG, Per CBM, Per W/M, Per Container, or Per MT.
- Enter the quantity (e.g. chargeable weight in KG, number of containers).
- Optionally select a different output currency.
- Click Calculate.
Total: 200 × $4.50 = $900.00 USD
Converted: $900.00 × 0.79 = £711.00 GBP
Rate Basis Explained
| Basis | When to Use |
|---|---|
| Per KG | Air freight, courier — enter chargeable weight as quantity |
| Per CBM | LCL sea freight quoted per cubic metre |
| Per W/M | LCL or breakbulk quoted per revenue ton |
| Per Container | FCL — enter number of containers |
| Per MT | Bulk cargo quoted per metric ton |
5. Surcharges
In the Rate Calculator tab, below the base rate inputs, you’ll find an expandable “Add Surcharges” section. This lets you add common freight surcharges on top of the base rate to get a complete cost breakdown.
Using Presets
The fastest way to add surcharges is to load a preset. Select one from the “Load Preset” dropdown and the surcharge table auto-fills with typical rates for that trade lane:
| Preset | Includes |
|---|---|
| Far East to UK — Ocean FCL | BAF, LSS, THC (origin + dest), ISPS, BL Fee, ENS Filing |
| Far East to UK — Ocean LCL | BAF, LSS, THC, ISPS, BL Fee, ENS, CFS charges |
| Far East to UK — Air Freight | FAF, SSC, Terminal Handling, AWB Fee |
| India to UK — Ocean FCL | BAF, LSS, THC, ISPS, BL Fee, ENS Filing |
| Middle East to UK — Ocean FCL | BAF, LSS, THC, ISPS, BL Fee, ENS Filing |
| Intra-Europe — Road | Fuel Surcharge (%), CMR Document Fee |
All preset rates are editable — adjust any value to match your carrier’s actual charges.
Adding Individual Surcharges
Use the quick-add dropdown to add surcharges one at a time. They’re grouped by category: Fuel, Terminal, Security, Seasonal, Documentation, Special Cargo, and Miscellaneous.
You can also click “+ Add Custom Surcharge” to create one with your own name.
Common Surcharges Explained
| Code | Name | What It Is |
|---|---|---|

8. Demurrage & Detention
Estimate the charges you’ll incur for keeping cargo at the port (demurrage) or holding a container beyond the free period (detention).
What’s the Difference?
| Charge | When It Applies |
|---|---|
| Demurrage | Cargo sitting at the port/terminal beyond free days — before you collect it |
| Detention | Holding the carrier’s container outside the port — after collection, before you return it empty |
How to Use
- Select the calculation mode: Demurrage Only, Detention Only, or Combined.
- Enter the relevant dates (discharge, collection, return).
- Set the free days allowed.
- Choose flat rate or tiered rate and enter the daily charges.
- Enter the number of containers.
- Click Calculate.
Results show the total days, chargeable days, cost per container, and total charges. A timeline visualisation shows the free period versus the chargeable period.
