Description
Kaolin, or china clay, is a fine white clay shipped in bulk for ceramics, paper, paint and fillers. At around 0.82 m3/t it is a deadweight cargo. As a fine clay it is a Group A cargo, able to liquefy if its moisture is too high, so its carriage turns on moisture control rather than density.
Stowage & loading
Loading proceeds only when the moisture content is shown to be below the transportable moisture limit, supported by certificates and the master's checks, since wet clay can liquefy. The fine material is loaded by grab or conveyor, and dust is controlled when it is dry.
Hazards & handling
The governing hazard is liquefaction: above the TML the fine, wet clay can flow and form a free surface that threatens stability under the ship's motion. When dry it is dusty, and it can cake; otherwise it is chemically inert and does not react or self-heat.
Carriage & discharge
The stow is monitored for moisture migration, free water and surface movement, with conditions logged. Discharge is by grab; caked material is broken out, dust is controlled when the clay is dry, and the residue is cleaned from holds on completion.
Key hazards
- Liquefaction if moisture exceeds the transportable moisture limit
- Free-surface formation and cargo shift threatening stability
- Dust when dry and caking of the fine clay
Loading precautions
- Confirm moisture is below the TML with certificates and own checks
- Monitor the stow for moisture migration and surface movement
- Control dust when the clay is dry
Stowage factors are indicative and vary with grade, origin, moisture and packing. Always verify against the shipper's cargo declaration and the applicable IMSBC Code schedule before fixing or loading. This is general information, not professional or safety advice.
